Burning coal to create electricity is an unnecessary and dangerous business, but…

Did you know the company HRL is planning to build a new coal-fired power station for Victoria?

HRL has proposed a new 600MW power station near Morwell in the Latrobe Valley.  The company want to comercialise a technology that turns brown coal (the dirtiest type of coal) into a gas called ‘syngas’ so that millions more tonnes of Australian brown coal can be exported to fuel a new generation of coal-fired power stations around the world.  Despite using this technology to turn brown coal into a gas, (which is then mixed with natural gas and burnt to create electricity), HRL’s proposed power-station would nevertheless be just as polluting as a regular black coal-fired power station!

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has granted  HRL a Works Approval for 300MW of their “Dual Gas” demonstration plant but the company is currently tied up in the courts while a coalition of environment and community groups challenge the EPA’s decision through VCAT.

Although HRL hasn’t found private investors for this irresponsible project, they have secured public money, with the primary financiers currently being the federal government ($100m) and the state government ($50m).
